Planning your wedding is exciting, but before you can officially say “I do,” you’ll need to obtain a Michigan marriage license. While the process is relatively straightforward, understanding the requirements ahead of time can help you avoid unnecessary stress as your wedding day approaches.
Where Do You Apply for a Marriage License?
Michigan residents must apply for a marriage license in the county where either applicant resides. If the applicants live in different Michigan counties, they may apply in either county.
Once issued, a marriage license can be used anywhere within the State of Michigan.
For example, if you live in Macomb County but are getting married in Wayne County, you can still obtain your license through Macomb County and use it for your ceremony in Detroit.
Waiting Period
Michigan law requires a three-day waiting period between the date you apply and the date your marriage license is issued.
For example, if you apply on Monday, your license would typically be available on Thursday.
Some counties may offer a waiver of the waiting period for an additional fee and under specific circumstances. Contact your county clerk’s office for details.
What You’ll Need to Apply
Requirements may vary slightly by county, but applicants are generally asked to provide:
- A valid government-issued photo ID
- Proof of residency
- Social Security numbers (if applicable)
- Information regarding parents’ names and places of birth
Be sure to verify specific requirements with your county clerk before applying.
How Long Is a Michigan Marriage License Valid?
Once issued, a Michigan marriage license is generally valid for 33 days.
This means you’ll want to schedule your application so that your license remains valid through your wedding day.
Who Can Officiate a Wedding in Michigan?
Michigan law allows several individuals to solemnize marriages, including:
- Ordained ministers and clergy members
- Judges and magistrates
- Certain elected officials
- Authorized wedding officiants
After your ceremony, your officiant will complete the marriage license and provide instructions regarding its return to the appropriate county clerk’s office.
After the Ceremony
Once your ceremony is complete, the signed marriage license must be returned to the county clerk’s office for processing. After it has been recorded, certified copies can be obtained directly from the clerk’s office for name changes and other legal purposes.
